As battles rage in the Gaza Strip, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi has warned of further displacement in the Middle East due to the war between Israel and Hamas, which has forced 85% of the Gaza population to flee their homes.
“The events in Israel and Gaza after October 7 are beyond the mandate of UNHCR,” Grandi noted during the Global Refugee Forum in Geneva.
“Unfortunately, we anticipate more civilian casualties and suffering, as well as further displacement threatening the region,” he added.
