Euroleague: «Teams tried to exclude Maccabi» [vid]

Revelations about what was said in the recent Euroleague shareholders meeting, which discussed Maccabi Tel Aviv and the serious problems that have arisen since the war between Israel and Hamas, were made by Israeli journalist Aral Weisberg.

Speaking to the website “Walla,” he revealed that teams – shareholders from Spain and Turkey requested the exclusion of Maccabi Tel Aviv from Euroleague, citing “security” issues. “Teams from Spain and Turkey tried to exclude the yellows. The official argument was security, but behind it lies the national and political within the organization,” he said. However, Weisberg noted that the proposal of these teams did not pass, as Olympiacos, Panathinaikos, Armani Milano and CSKA Moscow stood by Maccabi Tel Aviv and put… a stop to the desire of Turkish and Spanish clubs.

“Maccabi warned that they should not surrender to terrorism. Panathinaikos, Olympiacos, Milano and CSKA Moscow supported them, and the vote of no confidence was withdrawn without a vote,” he said, adding: “The board meeting, which lasted more than five hours, had been scheduled much earlier and dealt with various issues. In light of the developments in Israel, the impact of the war on Maccabi’s performance (and as a direct result of this, on Hapoel Tel Aviv’s continuation in the Eurocup) was discussed. Over the past week, behind-the-scenes efforts have been made to form a coalition that would lead to the complete removal of the Israelis, at least until the end of the current season,” he pointed out.
